Founded in 2000 and based in Norway, Runbox Solutions is an independent, limited liability company with headquarters in Oslo, where we are regulated by strong Norwegian consumer and privacy rights. The Runbox email service is operated and hosted in partnership with Copyleft Solutions, a trusted collaborator and minority shareholder of Runbox Solutions. The Runbox email servers are hosted at DigiPlex, a maximum security facility.

Sustainability at the Core

Protecting the planet is as central to Runbox as protecting your data. Our email servers run on 100% renewable energy — thanks to Norway’s abundance of hydroelectric power, they essentially run on water. Our data center sources all of its electricity from renewable sources, which matters because servers run around the clock and consume significant energy.

Beyond our infrastructure, we hold ourselves to a broader standard. We follow an active electronics recycling policy, reusing or donating obsolete hardware wherever possible and returning outdated equipment to certified recycling centers. Our team is distributed across three continents and we operate primarily through online collaboration, minimising travel and the footprint that comes with traditional office-based work.

We have held the Ethical Consumer Best Buy designation since 2020, and we actively support the Oslofjordens Friluftsråd — Norway’s largest outdoor recreation council — in their work to protect and restore the Oslo Fjord for future generations.

Privacy, Data Sovereignty, and Norwegian Law

We operate under Norway’s strong privacy laws, which provide some of the best legal protections for users’ data globally. Unlike many other email providers, we do not track or monetize your data, and we have no interest in serving ads. We are committed to a user-first model, ensuring your data remains private, secure, and protected from unauthorized surveillance or third-party tracking.

A key part of this is data sovereignty — knowing exactly where your data lives and who has jurisdiction over it. Runbox owns and operates its own servers, physically located in Oslo, Norway. This means your emails are governed exclusively by Norwegian law and GDPR, not the laws of any other country.

This distinction matters more than ever. The U.S. CLOUD Act allows American authorities to compel U.S.-based companies to hand over data stored anywhere in the world — including servers located in Europe. Because Runbox is a Norwegian company that owns its own infrastructure and uses no U.S.-controlled services, the CLOUD Act has no jurisdiction over us or your data. Any request from a foreign authority must go through Norway’s legal system, and we require a Norwegian court order before disclosing any user data.
